Aaron waited until Charlie was out of the room to ask what had been burning a hole in his brain. “Does anyone else find it strange that Drake doesn’t trust the future of the dragon realm with Charlie, but she’s literally holding it in the palm of her hand?”

Greg laughed. “Seriously, man.”

They both turned to Rich. He wasn’t giving anything away, nothing at all.

“You wanna tell us what that was all about? Or your history there? She didn’t know anything about your family dying. Not only that, but if you hated that woman you wouldn’t be as protective of her as you are.” Aaron didn’t mention she was a Prime. They’d have plenty of time to discuss that later after they found the girls.

Rich, just like him and Greg, knew how to hide his emotions. It was beaten into them, literally, in their training while they were growing up. Those beatings, learning how to hide their emotions and put on a blank mask, were the reason they were the best at what they did.

Aaron watched as that mask crumpled. In front of him wasn’t the same heartless killer he loved. No, standing there was a man that had everything taken from him.

“You know I was ten when my parents were killed.” He started slowly, taking a deep breath. “But she was only seven. The story of her getting lost in the mountains? The only reason I knew where to find her is because we’d bonded through her power as a Prime.”

Aaron watched Rich come to the decision to tell them everything. It was too late to take it back instead, he sat down and waited for his friend to go on.

“I told our fathers. After I found her, I told them what she was. It’s why she was taken to the human realm. My father told hers that if she stayed, she’d be tortured by the Mad King.”

“We’re gonna put a pin in this,” Greg said decisively. “It’s clear that all three of us feel the same connection to her. While she was talking, I could feel her emotions pulling at me, coercing me into comforting her.”

“Same,” Aaron piped up.

“That’s not going to go anywhere.” Rich got up and walked to the door. “I’ve been trying to burn that bond out of my mind since I was ten. Nothing’s worked yet. You were right, before. When you said we were fucked. That woman has owned me since I was a child. Now, she’s got ahold of all three of us.”

Rich left Aaron and Greg alone in Charlie’s office. Aaron could hear the sound of people talking outside the door, but he quickly shut it so that they could talk.

“This is gonna go south, fast.” Greg shook his head. “A Prime. You know that we’re gonna have to convince her to give us a chance. Otherwise, we’re going to end up burying a lot of bodies.”

Aaron looked at the door for a moment, thinking about their options. “Rich is gonna have to agree.
